More wet weather due after brief respite.

Byline: Rebecca Nolan The Register-Guard

As sunshine washed over the Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its  on Wednesday afternoon, it was easy to forget that driving rain and blowing winds had flooded Lane County roadways and closed or delayed school start times just hours earlier.

Runoff that had been creeping up driveways and lawns toward homes pulled back around midday. High water that swamped roadways receded. The clouds parted and revealed blue skies.

But forecasters warned Oregonians not to break out the deck chairs just yet.

The National Weather Service predicted that another wet weather system would move through the Pacific Northwest today and tonight. Some areas can expect 1 to 3 inches of rainfall between today and Friday.

The forecast rain will fall on already saturated ground, once again overwhelming city drainage capabilities and forcing runoff into low-lying areas.

One such area is the Springfield Country Club, where water still covered much of the back nine holes on Wednesday afternoon.

Gaskill wasn't too worried about the flooding. "It tends to dry out just as fast as it fills up," he said.

The weather had more serious consequences for area schools on Wednesday.

The Blachly School District canceled classes because of flooding and mudslides. Students had been sent home early Tuesday when a tree fell on power lines bringing electricity to the K-12 school.

A large puddle on Interstate 5 near Goshen caused at least two crashes when drivers hit the water, hydroplaned and spun out. No one was seriously injured. Oregon State Police urged motorists to use caution during heavy rain and to drive at speeds appropriate for the weather conditions.
