More than a number. (Comment).

I read with interest your discussion in Best's Review concerning the number of occurrences at the World Trade Center. ("All in the Numbers," August 2002)

Another question is: Will the property insurers pay in full if there is less than a full functional replacement for the destroyed properties? What if the rebuilding involves a far lower number of square feet of office space than in the original buildings?

A lot in a few words

You did a nice job with your article "Crisis Coast to Coast" summarizing the current problems in the medical professional liability arena. (September 2002) As a former magazine writer, I know it's not easy to cover such a sweeping subject in the space editors give us.

Examining mortality and life expectancy Life Expectancy

1. The age until which a person is expected to live.

2. The remaining number of years an individual is expected to live, based on IRS issued life expectancy tables.

Your coverage of mortality in this issue is outstanding. ("Approaching Immortality," October 2002)

the 2001 CSO table are another matter. Using the composite male near birthday version of the table without selection factors, I get 76.6 years life expectancy at birth; 43.1 years at age 35; 16.8 years at age 65; 2.1 years at age 100.

Some demographers believe that the maximum human life span has fallen in the 120-year range for many millennia. But that is a completely different concept from average life expectancy.
