More shelter spaces for Alberta women.


EDMONTON Edmonton (ĕd`məntən), city (1991 pop. 616,741), provincial capital, central Alta., Canada, on the North Saskatchewan River. The center of the largest metropolitan area in Alberta, Edmonton, known as the "Gateway to the North," is located  -- Fourteen new women's shelter A Women's Shelter is a place of temporary refuge and support for women escaping violent situations, such as rape, and domestic violence. Having the ability to leave a situation of violence is valuable for women who are under attack because such situations frequently involve an  spaces will open in open Edmonton and Calgary Calgary (kăl`gərē), city (1991 pop. 710,677), S Alta., Canada, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The largest city in Alberta and the fastest-growing major city in Canada, Calgary is a corporate, transportation, and financial , as a result of more than $300,000 in funding. With the new spaces, Alberta now has a total of 413 beds across the province. The funding includes: $108,102 to the Lurana Shelter in Edmonton to open seven new beds, $121,894 to the Sherrif King Home in Calgary to open four new beds, and $72,719 to the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter (CWES) was established in Calgary in 1974. CWES started as part of a grassroots movement to assist abused women. CWES is now a full domestic violence service agency with programs that address crisis treatment, intervention and the prevention  to open three new beds.

With the additional beds, Edmonton now has 109 spaces and Calgary has 90 spaces. In 2002-03, there were 5,601 women and 5,766 children admitted to shelter facilities in Alberta. In 2001-02, 5,194 women and 5,546 children were admitted.
