More immigrants needed? (Letters to the Editor).

I must respond to your March 10th cover story entitled "Your Job May Be Next!" The article was followed by a subsection entitled "Fighting for Our Jobs," in which the writer urged the Immigration and Naturalization Service Noun 1.  and Border Patrol to tighten their restrictions on immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important. . The writer ignores the devastating dev·as·tate

 economic consequences of immigration restriction.

Competition is crucial to economic prosperity, and immigration restriction is an attempt by American workers to eliminate their competitors. Once the competitors of American workers have been eliminated, the American workers lose the incentive to be productive. Why work hard when one does not have to worry about an immigrant competing for his job? These restrictions on immigration drive up wages for American workers, which places a burden on American businessmen and employers, and in turn causes them to charge higher prices for their products.

Contributing to the negative effects of immigration restriction is the opportunity cost of enforcing immigration laws immigration laws nplleyes fpl de inmigración

. The Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Border Patrol spend over $800 million a year enforcing these counterproductive laws. This money could be used more productively in the free market, rather than hunting down harmless foreigners for deportation.

Because the government criminalizes these hiring practices, black markets for hiring of immigrants naturally develop. Because the government does not legally enforce contracts formed in black markets, the incentive to cheat or resort to violence increases. Black markets also result in a decline in the quality of goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Consumption of goods and services is assumed to produce utility (unless the "good" is a "bad"). It is often used when referring to a Goods and Services Tax. .

Immigration restriction is simply fundamental violation of private property rights, by depriving Americans of the right to invite who they want onto their own property. Due to roadblocks at the border, immigrants often wind up trespassing along farms and private property along the border. All laws restricting immigration and the hiring of immigrants should be repealed, and the Gestapo-like INS INS
