The first satellite photographs of Earth were made August 14, 1959 by the US satellite Explorer 6.
 recently revealed that an ice mass the size of Manhattan broke free from Canada's Ellesmere Island Ellesmere Island, 82,119 sq mi (212,688 sq km), c.500 mi (800 km) long, in the Arctic Ocean, N Nunavut Territory, Canada; second largest and northernmost island of the Arctic Archipelago. It is separated from NW Greenland by a narrow passage.  in August 2005, leaving behind a trail of floating ice chunks. Scientists say the loss of the Ayles Ice Shelf Coordinates:  The Ayles Ice Shelf was one of six major ice shelves in Canada, all located on the northern coast of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. , one of six major shelves left in Arctic Canada, was the largest event of its kind in 30 years. They point to climate change as a major contributing factor.
