Intermediate. Building on the success of their firs six volumes of Classic Favorites, Paul Sheftel and Phyllis Alpert Lehrer have expanded their collection with More Classic Favorites (thirty-one pieces by nineteen composers in Volume 1). The introductory pages include "Observations and Suggestions" about practice preparation and valuable information about problem-solving techniques. Composer biographies precede the musical offerings and are unusually substantial for this early-intermediate level. Along with some familiar favorites, students and teachers will delight in several new discoveries. My favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. They released two CDs: Love at Absolute Zero and Happiest Days of Our Lives. My Favorite broke up on September 14, 2005, when singer Andrea Vaughn left the band. pieces in the collection are a charming character sketch called "Sunrise" by Gretchaninoff, the great Russian pedagogue, and "Lento len·to Music adv. & adj. In a slow tempo. Used chiefly as a direction. n. pl. len·tos A lento passage or movement. " by Stravinsky. A giant in the composer world, Stravinsky wrote very few pieces below the advanced level. The companion compact disk not only gives artistic performances of each selection, but also introduces the student to Sheftel's and Lehrer's teaching styles. It is Sheftel's voice we hear as he gives three or four pointers about each t piece, suggests appropriate tempo ranges and adds touches of his trademark offbeat off·beat n. Music An unaccented beat in a measure. adj. Slang Not conforming to an ordinary type or pattern; unconventional: offbeat humor. sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor" sense of humour, humor, humour . Sheftel reminds the students who are somewhat bored with etudes, "Any more Czerny, and I'll call my attorney." With regard to tempo, he warns those who would opt for speed over control, "Play this piece as fast as you can but not as fast as you cannot." While the composition selection is appealing, I would have preferred more two-page pieces--there only are nine out of thirty-one. Overall, the book looks good, with clean engraving and minimal editing. Suzanne W.
