and art curricula. One author teaches 5th-graders for all academics and art, the other author is a writer-in-residence working in a K-6 multigrade school. The reader follows along as the children and teachers conduct an in-depth study of one aspect of nature and relate it to their everyday lives through journals, multimedia art, creative poems and reflections about the moon.

combination of process and product, clearly delineating the beginning, development and extended applications of this nature study project. The reader learns how children's inquiry and questions evolved into a focused-inquiry project involving extensive reading, writing, art, research and creative language arts activities. The approach is clearly inviting for both children and adults.

The authors include 28 writing mini-lessons, as well as 28 art minilessons for the non-artist teacher, using various media. Numerous examples of children's work are included, along with excerpts from the teachers' personal journals. This is an outstanding example of an evolving curriculum built around children's inquiry and research. The children's observations became the basis for written descriptions (some poetic), which led to artistic works, which in turn led to better observations, more detailed descriptions and more descriptive writing.

Moon Journals is well organized and well written, designed to guide educators in applying the project approach around children's inquiry and focused nature studies. It is useful for both new and experienced teachers, as well as for families interested in studying nature with their children. It also can be used in early childhood, elementary or middle-level teacher education methods classes as a model of how to conduct inquiry-based focused nature studies with children as the basis for language arts and art curriculum.
