"The integration of Qtopia with MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition creates a very compelling software stack for handheld and other consumer devices," said Scott Hedrick, senior product marketing manager at MontaVista. "Manufacturers of intelligent devices are eager to build upon this integration, to enjoy significantly lower development costs and faster time to market for applications like smart phones."

MontaVista recently announced the new MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, the first commercial Linux operating system and cross-development environment specifically designed for consumer electronics devices, including mobile phones, high definition digital television, set-top boxes and automotive telematics. Hundreds of products are already in development using MontaVista Linux, including mobile phones, PDAs, advanced remote controls, high definition televisions, HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates , PVRs, set-top boxes, digital receivers, automotive telematics, musical instruments, gaming machines and karaoke systems. Recently, Sony and NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
released new consumer products built on MontaVista Linux. Several leading cell phone manufacturers have also expressed an interest in building next generation cell phones based on MontaVista Linux.

About Qtopia

Qtopia is an embedded Linux application environment that includes a comprehensive development environment and a set of PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated  applications written by Trolltech, as well as a large and growing set of third-party applications. Qtopia has been embraced by the embedded Linux community, developers, and device manufacturers because it allows choice in three arenas: chipset architectures; device types; and user interface design.

Qtopia fosters hardware choice by minimizing hardware dependencies. And it allows user interface innovation because it is based on Qt(R), which can be and has been used to build a broad array of user interfaces, both on the desktop and in embedded applications. In addition to the early acceptance by leading vendors, Qtopia has been chosen as the application environment for a number of new mobile devices.

About MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition

MontaVista(TM) Linux(R) Consumer Electronics Edition 3.0 (CEE cee
n.
The letter c.
) is the first Linux operating system and cross-development environment specifically designed for consumer electronics applications such as mobile phones, digital televisions, set-top boxes and automotive telematics. CEE enhances Linux with dynamic power management, rich consumer-focused networking support and consumer-grade reliability. It forms the foundation of solution stacks from software partners in key vertical mobile, home and automotive markets. CEE is tailored to the demands of highly constrained mobile devices, which require low power consumption, restricted memory size and short boot and resume times. CEE 3.0 incorporates file system enhancements and new tools to measure performance, system timing and memory size. MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition supports XIP (Execute In Place) The ability to execute a program directly from a memory card.  (eXecute In Place In computer science, an execute in place (XIP) file system is one that allows certain sections of programs to be stored read-only in an area other than main system memory. This is often used to allow code to run from the same location at which it is permanently stored. ) of the kernel and applications as well as streaming media optimizations.

Availability

Qtopia will be available as a pre-built and certified optional product on all MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition platforms from MontaVista Software and the company's sales and distribution channels worldwide in the second quarter of 2003. MontaVista builds, tests and supports Qtopia on CEE, providing substantial benefits to developers of products using Qtopia. The pre-integration with CEE will enable projects to get started faster and with more assurance of success. CEE will provide customers with the MontaVista Linux kernel, software updates, deployment components, utilities, development tools, comprehensive technical support, access to the MontaVista Zone and hands-on training.
