development and deployment solution for building embedded

Java(TM) applications

-- Qtopia(R) for CEE -- A complete ready-to-use smart phone and

PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  application framework

-- Qt(R)/Embedded for CEE -- The popular Qt/Embedded API

-- MontaVista Graphics for CEE -- A powerful network-enabled

graphics system based on X Windows See X Window.

Most of these products already support MontaVista Linux Professional Edition (Pro) and have now also been fully integrated and tested to run on MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition 3.0.

MontaVista Software adds significant value to the software products from IBM (viz.: WebSphere Studio Device Developer) and Trolltech(R) (viz.: Qtopia and Qt/Embedded). MontaVista builds and validates each one of them for the particular processors, video chipsets or reference board configurations supported by MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition, and delivers it in binary and source, ready-to-deploy, to device developers. These products, along with MontaVista Graphics for CEE, are available directly from MontaVista Software, which also provides full technical support.

"CEE has gained tremendous traction with many of the world's leading consumer electronics companies. Now, these new products allow rapid application development and offer developers a great out-of-the-box experience with fully integrated and ready-to-use tools," said Sheila Baker, vice president of marketing, MontaVista Software. "MontaVista Software leads the industry in offering comprehensive, fully-tested and optimized development and runtime platforms while supporting customers via a single point of contact. With this combination of products, CEE is arguably the most complete systems software development environment available for consumer electronics devices today. We are empowering application developers who want to get robust, feature rich products to market quickly."

IBM WebSphere Studio Device Developer for CEE is the premier development and deployment solution for building embedded Java applications for the new generation of intelligent, networked devices. In addition to the WebSphere Studio Device Developer Integrated Development Environment See IDE.

(IDE), this new product provides two runtime environments. To meet the latest J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) A version of Java 2 for cellphones, PDAs and consumer appliances. J2ME uses the K Virtual Machine (KVM), a specialized Java interpreter for devices with limited memory. (TM) specifications designed for the wide variety of consumer device solutions based on Java technology, WebSphere Studio Device Developer for CEE incorporates the WebSphere Micro Environment Version 5.0, a certified J2ME runtime environment. For extended flexibility, it also includes the WebSphere Custom Environment to provide a customizable runtime environment that can be tailored to the specific needs of particular embedded device. MontaVista Software builds, tests and supports these Java runtimes.

Qtopia for CEE delivers a complete, ready-to-use smart phone and PDA application suite and framework based on Qt/Embedded including PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated  (Personal Information Management) synchronization to MS Outlook. Qtopia for CEE provides an integrated, tested and tuned binary software suite including source code to device manufacturers that enables improved productivity and reduced time-to-market. Combining the Qt API and the Qtopia software suite, this toolkit offers developers a flexible solution for the rapid development of smart phones, PDAs and other advanced devices.

Qt/Embedded for CEE delivers the popular Qt API in a small-footprint implementation designed specifically to meet the needs of embedded device developers creating graphics-based applications. With special engineering features designed to speed host-based application development, Qt/Embedded for CEE provides MontaVista customers with the assurance of a powerful graphics toolkit.

MontaVista Graphics for CEE delivers powerful, configurable footprint, network-enabled graphics based on the X Windows system. Well known and used for the past 15 years, X provides serious graphics features in a modular package designed to work across a wide variety of platforms. X is supported by a large number of development tools and auxiliary applications (window managers, browsers, multimedia services).

"These products have been so well received by Pro customers that MontaVista is now extending them to CEE," said Mike Mathews, senior product marketing manager, MontaVista Software. "We provide our customers with one-stop product and service convenience. They will now have both the confidence of fully tested and integrated products and the freedom to choose the components they need for their particular solution."
