Monitoring your polling place: election 2002-leagues in action. (At Issue).Having worked hard to register new voters and educate all voters on voting procedures, the candidates and issues prior to Election Day, state and local Leagues do not stop there. Across the nation on Election Day, our state and local Leagues are particularly active in various capacities--answering questions by phone at League offices, assisting voters who need transportation to their polling places, functioning as election officials and poll workers, to mention a few. In addition, representatives from the Leagues (and other interested citizens) can play a vital role by making sure that voters in their jurisdiction are being served well by their local election services. Here is a list of questions to which you might seek answers in your monitoring capacity. * Are there enough poll workers and are they readily identifiable arid ar·id adj. 1. Lacking moisture, especially having insufficient rainfall to support trees or woody plants: an arid climate. 2. welcoming? * Are the poll workers able to answer voters' questions? * Are there adequate signs to help the voter VOTER. (2) To move through the menu structure in a software application. the polling place? * Are there signs informing voters of their rights--to privacy, provisional ballots A provisional ballot is used to record a vote when there is some question in regards to a given voter's eligibility. A provisional ballot would be cast when:
* Is there good access for people with disabilities--those in wheelchairs, the visually impaired, etc.? * Are provisional ballots or affidavits available for those who are told they will not be allowed to cast a regular ballot? * Are voters who arrive on time being allowed to vote even though they do not reach the voting booth by the time the polling place closes because of long lines In communications, circuits that are capable of handling transmissions over long distances. ? * Is any voter being turned away? Why? * Are identification/signature requests in line with the requirements of your jurisdiction? * If the polling place has new voting equipment, are those voters in need of instruction or assistance of any sort receiving the help they request?
