Mondrian makeover: middle school. The Art Problem Students create a paper stained-glass design using the work of Dutch Neo-Plasticist painter, Piet Modrian, as inspiration. Students can re-interpret his work within a circle or square framework and expand on Mondrian's use of primary colors those developed from the solar beam by the prism, viz., red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, which are reduced by some authors to three, - red, green, and violet-blue. These three are sometimes called fundamental colors. See under Color. See also: Color Primary by including patterns or other color schemes within the design. Materials Black paper 18" x 18" (46 x 46 cm), black strips 1" (2.5 cm) assorted colored and patterns papers, cellophane cellophane, thin, transparent sheet or tube of regenerated cellulose. Cellophane is used in packaging and as a membrane for dialysis. It is sometimes dyed and can be moisture-proofed by a thin coating of pyroxylin. , scissors scissors Cutting instrument or tool consisting of a pair of opposed metal blades that meet and cut when the handles at their ends are brought together. Modern scissors are of two types: the more usual pivoted blades have a rivet or screw connection between the cutting ends or X-Acto knife, glue stick, newspaper for table Directions Students are shown examples of Piet Mondrian's work and briefed on his personal desire for order and reasoning in his life. Students measure and cut a large circle or square from an 18" (46 cm) square paper, leaving a border. Black paper strips are arranged in an interesting horizontal and vertical arrangement within the opening and glued to the paper. Up to three diagonal strips can be added to the design. A variety of colored not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed. See also: Color papers are cut and glued neatly to the grid design, creating a faux stained-glass effect. All gluing is done from one side. The finished piece is flipped over and displayed from the other side. Assessing Learning Did the student demonstrate accuracy in horizontal/vertical placement of strips? Did the student demonstrate balance within the design? Was the design and use of color complex and unique in its interpretation of Mondrian? Did the student demonstrate good artistry?
