MOMOCHI, Reiko. Confidential confessions Confidential Confessions is a manga by Reiko Momochi. The individual volumes of the series were originally published by Kodansha in Japan as Memai (Dizzy), Namida (Tears), and Tobira (Door). , vol. 1. Tokyopop. illus. c2003. 1-59182-393-5. $9.99. A

Confidential Confessions bills itself as "a controversial manga maNga is a popular Turkish nu metal/rapcore band. Their music is mainly a fusion of alternative metal and hip hop music, with a touch of Anatolian melodies; with heavy use of turntables, invoking comparisons with modern American nu metal bands.  that tackles society's most complex issues." In the first story Manatsu, a depressed teenager who collects her own scabs, meets Asparagus asparagus, perennial garden vegetable (Asparagus officinalis) of the family Liliaceae (lily family), native to the E Mediterranean area and now naturalized over much of the world. , a girl who cuts her arms with razors. Manatsu needs attention and friends; Asparagus is seriously disturbed and needs psychiatric help. The girls spend a great deal of time planning their double-suicide: writing the perfect note, having a nice picture for the funeral, and debating how they should kill themselves.

In the second story, Satsuki, a teen runaway-turned-prostitute, meets Ryo, a street performer. Satsuki sells Ryo's guitar one day, falls in love with him the next day, and despite his protestations that he can write bad song lyrics without a guitar, decides to turn one last trick so that she can buy his guitar back. Of course the last trick turns out to be a narc, so it's off to the juvenile hall, and it goes without saying that she never sees Ryo again.

Confidential Confessions is aimed squarely at teenage girls, and some of the material is exploitive, such as the sequence when Manatsu, pulled from a building ledge, pees herself. There is a line between "controversial drama" and ' "penny dreadful Noun 1. penny dreadful - a melodramatic paperback novel

does a great job of telling a story from Manatsu's point of view and making her a realistic, sympathetic character A sympathetic character is a fictional character in a story with whom the writer expects to reader to identify with and care about, if not necessarily admire. Protagonists, almost by definition, fit into the category of sympathetic character, however so do many minor characters and . Also, this type of material has an audience. Therefore, I will recommend Confidential Confessions, with the following caveat--strong material makes this suitable for older YAs only.

A--Recommended for advanced students and adults. This code will help librarians and teachers working in high schools where there are honors and advanced placement students. This also will help extend KLIATT's usefulness in public libraries.
