Molly doesn't know Fidel.

When Molly Ivins Mary Tyler "Molly" Ivins (August 30 1944 – January 31 2007) was a liberal American newspaper columnist, political commentator, and best-selling author from Austin, Texas.  wrote, "We could have and should have made friends with Fidel Castro Noun 1. Abusing a small country of eleven million people because of the threat of a good example belittles America, and allowing Jesse Helms Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. (born October 18, 1921) is a former five-term Republican U.S. Senator from North Carolina, and a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. When Fidel retires, there will be dedicated representatives ready to carry forward the revolutionary gains of the past forty-seven years. Molly might note that there are no billionaires in Cuba--they are all in Miami, voting for Bush.

I usually agree with Molly Ivins. She has the courage to say what is needed to be said about this Administration. However, her latest column in The Progressive disappointed me.

Fidel is a great figure in Cuba's history. He liberated Cuba from the claws of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . Cuba was our playground.

I urge Molly to learn more about this tiny island's history. She can watch a documentary about Cuba's revolution, Fidel Castro, or the poetic movie by a Soviet director, Yo Soy Cuba. And last, but not least, read the book Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq, by Stephen Kinzer Stephen Kinzer is an American author and newspaper reporter. He is a veteran New York Times correspondent who has reported from more than fifty countries on four continents. During the 1980s he covered revolution and social upheaval in Central America. . He dedicated several sections to Cuba's history.
