Molina and Co. offer something new.

Byline: POP NOTES By Carolyn Lamberson The Register-Guard

"Leave the City" may be the best Neil Young song Young never wrote.

"Half my life spent on a highway/ Half my life I didn't choose," sings Jason Molina Jason Molina is an American singer-songwriter, originally from Lorain, Ohio. He first came to prominence performing and recording under the name Songs: Ohia, both in solo projects and with a rotating cast of musicians. , frontman front·man

and ringmaster of Magnolia Electric Co. "I have seen the North Star/ Shining in the freight yard/ And I knew it was hard time/ That it's come through/ It's made him thankful for the blues."

Molina's voice doesn't quite reach the nasally, twangy heights of Young, but he comes darn close. And on Magnolia Electric Co.'s latest album, "What Comes After the Blues," Molina creates a sonic flashback flash·back

to the '70s, when Young, Bob Seger, John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty were reinventing the whole notion of folk-rock, with the emphasis on rock.

Molina recorded seven full-length studio albums under the name Songs: Ohia. He's abandoned that name in favor of Magnolia Electric Co., taking the name of Songs: Ohia's final record.

And they'll be on the road in support of that new disc, which is less than a month old. On Monday, Magnolia Electric Co. will power up for a show at Sam Bond's Garage, 407 Blair Blvd. Opening the gig will be Eugene's own Deke deke
