Jerry Johns, president of Southwestern Insurance Information Service urged the industry to speak up on the mold issue, citing the enormous media coverage on shows such as "48 Hours" and "20/20." Alexis Dick, deputy commissioner of inspections for the Texas Department of Insurance, reported that changes in construction practices could help limit mold claims. Vapor or moisture house wraps should be mandated to help seal walls and intersection points of roofs and walls, he said.

Representing reinsurers, Henry C. Zinmer III, senior vice president and senior property officer of Gerling Global Reinsurance Corporation of America, said reinsurers might develop exclusionary language for mold coverage that might be complemented or offset by optional forms of coverage.
