Moesta, Rebecca & Anderson, Kevin J. Ocean realm.

MOESTA, Rebecca & ANDERSON, Kevin J. Ocean realm. (Crystal Doors, Book II.) Little, Brown. 290p. c2007 0-316-01056-1. $15.99. JS

This sequel to Island Realm finds the five apprentices celebrating following the defeat of the sea creature merlons in their latest attack on the island of Elantya, the only land in a water-bound world. Vic and Gwen, the 14-year-old cousins who came to Elantya by somehow opening a crystal door, the means of travel between worlds, have settled into their role as apprentices to Sage Rubicas, learning about the magic in Elantya and in themselves. Just when Vic's father appears in Elantya after finally finding a crystal door, Vic and Gwen, along with their fellow apprentices and friends, Sharif, Tiaret and Lyssandra, are taken captive and transported to the underwater world of the merlons. During their captivity, the group learns a great deal about their cruel enemies and their plan to destroy Elantya using the magical lavaja that flows from the center of the earth. Their goal is to escape and warn the sages, but there is another challenge at every turn. The authors create an intricate SF undersea world, skillfully tweaking the laws of science as we know them. Book II ends with a promise of the next adventure with business left undone, and the apprentices fulfilling the ancient prophecy. Fans will be anxious for the next installment as the story continues.
