The New AVC Standard for Digital Video

Today, digital video compression is based primarily on MPEG-2, a ten year old standard that has reached its limit of video compression efficiency. Recently, a new more efficient global standard has emerged most commonly referred to as the AVC standard, formerly called H.264 or MPEG-4.10. AVC is a new and open video compression standard, ratified in 2003 by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks.  and the MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs).  H.264 foundation. Demonstrations by Modulus Video have shown AVC to significantly outperform MPEG-2 by factors of between two and four. Digital video solutions using AVC require at least 50 percent less bandwidth or storage capacity for a given video stream at equivalent quality. AVC is expected to become the dominant standard worldwide for broadcast-quality video compression across all media and formats. AVC's benefits accrue to both existing broadcasters and new entrants for HD and SD applications.
