Modified resins.

P-184 and P-185 are modified phenol formaldehyde resins developed to replace resorcinol resorcinol /re·sor·ci·nol/ (re-zor´si-nol) a bactericidal, fungicidal, keratolytic, exfoliative, and antipruritic agent, used especially as a topical keratolytic in the treatment of acne and other dermatoses.  resins. In combination with a methylene methylene /meth·y·lene/ (meth?i-len) the bivalent hydrocarbon radical —CH2— or CH2dbond.

(HMT-80/EPR/P) or hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM-50/EPR/S), the resins function as adhesion promoter additives to the rubber compound. Typical applications for this type of adhesive system include bonding rubber to rubber, fabric or steel cord. The resins have replaced straight resorcinol in many applications due to improved dispersibility, adhesion performance and health concerns, according to according to

the company. P-184 and P-185 are said to be especially important in polychloroprene fabric adhesion, since normal resorcinol can scorch CR. The bonding mechanism can occur at a minimum temperature of 250[degrees]F, but the reaction is very slow. A more practical temperature of reaction is in the range of 285-300[degrees]F.
