Modern, Contemporary and Latin American Art at Butterfields Features Blue Chip Artists, Three-City Sale.


SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 1998--Butterfield's largest and most spectacular offering of Modern, Contemporary and Latin American paintings and sculpture comes to the auction block Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, in a sale simulcast between San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Elgin, Ill. with superior works from blue chip artists the likes of Picasso, Leger, Warhol, de Kooning, Guston and Braque attracting interest.

California previews are slated for San Francisco Oct. 17-19 and in Los Angeles Oct. 24-26.

A diverse and impressive selection of 20th century oils, acrylics and watercolors, sculptures of bronze, aluminum and/or steel comprise the October sale, the first time such material has been offered in three cities


The Three Cities is a collective description of the three fortified cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea on the Island of Malta, which are enclosed by the massive line of fortification created by the Knights of St John, the Cottonera Lines.

Five Picassos are included in the auction, comprising several bronzes, one cast after an original copper piece in 1906, a pastel on paper "Seated Harlequin" drawn circa December, 1970 (est. $30/40,000) and "Tete barbu," a sardonic 8 by 11 inch felt tip pen on paper drawing, given by the artist as a gift to a journalist in 1968.

"Late Fall," an oil on canvas by the artist's artist Philip Guston Philip Guston (July 27, 1913 – June 7, 1980) was a notable painter and printmaker in the New York School, which included many of the Abstract Expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning. , first exhibited at New York's The Jewish Museum There are a number museums called the Jewish Museum including:
  • Jewish Museum Berlin, Jewish Museum Frankfurt and Jewish Museum Munich in Germany
  • Jewish Museum (New York) in The United States of America
  • Jewish Museum (Bucharest) in Romania
 in 1966, should bring $350,000 to $550,000.

Guston's magnificent 1952 "Untitled No. 8" held the top lot spot at Butterfield's April auction, bringing $717,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $400/600,000. Willem de Kooning's "Three Women," an oil on paper laid down on board, is a dramatic three panel work expected to fetch $400,000 to $600,000.

Several Warhols are included in the auction, led by "Four Marilyn Reversals," a black and white acrylic and silkscreen on canvas from a private East Coast collection. The 3 by 2 foot work is signed and inscribed, included in an "Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonne" and estimated at $250,000 to $350,000.

 photographs "Untitled (Daisy)," 1969-70 is expected to bring $30,000 to $50,000 and "$," acrylic silkscreened on canvas, should fetch $50,000 to $70,000.

"Reclining Nude," a bronze by Colombian artist Fernando Botero is expected to sell for $250,000 to $350,000 and desirable sculptures within the Latin American section The Latin American Section was established as a partial successor to Special War Policies Unit (SWPU) on August 28 1943. The Latin Section acted as the technical legal staff of the U.S.  of the sale features a group of sculpture, particularly Mexican sculpture, by Castaneda, Zuniga and Leonardo Neirman.

Also offered will be examples of work by contemporary artists such as Sam Francis, Richard Diebenkorn, John Altoon, David Gilhooly, Robert Arneson, Louise Nevelson, Helen Frankenthaler and Sandro Chia among many others.
