Mazumdar (process modeling and steelmaking, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur) and Evans (materials science and engineering, U. of California-Berkeley) here respond to long-standing requests of metallurgical engineering students and practicing engineers by showing how the principles and methods of process modeling can be applied to the industrial-scale production of steel using the popular MATLAB computer software. Catering to self-learning beginners they begin with a brief review of the history and development of both steelmaking and modeling, and the contemporary importance of such matters as environmental emissions and product quality. Most attention is devoted to the mathematical modeling of fluid flow, liquid-state and solid-state processing operations, and macroscopic modeling of ladle metallurgy steelmaking. They also set out the elements of physical modeling, however, and describe intelligent modeling using neural networks and genetic algorithms. Each chapter includes test questions and numerical problems.
