Modcomp Cerplex, L.P. donates REAL STAR system to SEFLIN, helping to provide 4.5 million South Florida residents access to the Information Highway.
SEFLIN's member libraries work together to promote cooperation and resource sharing in order to efficiently and effectively serve the information needs of South Florida residents.
MODCOMP's REAL/STAR system is being used with SEFLIN Free-Net, a computer network of community information. The REAL/STAR system carries the heavy load of Usenets and discussion group messages, a very popular feature on SEFLIN Free-Net. SEFLIN Free-Net is accessible to everyone in Southeast Florida free of charge. The network of information is built by the community for the community.
Government agencies, schools, civic groups, business and other organizations provide and maintain files of information readily available to the public. SEFLIN Free-Net emphasizes local, community-based information and provides limited access to the Internet. SEFLIN Free-Net opened in the spring of 1994 in Broward County, and in the summer of 1995 in Palm Beach and Dade counties.
Since SEFLIN Free-Net opened in the spring of 1994, the system has been accessed more than one million times. More than 25,000 South Florida residents have become registered users, and more than 300 local organizations have become information providers. SEFLIN Free-Net provides access to information through computers in public, community college and university libraries, as well as through home or office computers. Internet access to SEFLIN Free-Net is "bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us" (IP No. 126.96.36.199).
