Mobilink Announces Wireless GPRS Internet Chip; New Chip Speaks GPRS -- Speeds Wireless Internet to Handsets.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1999--

Mobilink Telecom announced today a new chip that will increase the speed for wireless web-browsing.

The Mobilink ML2020 is a System-On-A-Chip GSM Baseband ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  for Wireless Internet Applications. The chip comes bundled with multi-slot GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations.  software and a handset reference design that provide manufacturers a complete solution for bringing internet-ready GSM handset products to market quickly.

Fast Wireless Link

The ML2020 employs a higher link speed, allowing even faster data rates than today's dial-up PC connections. This mechanism, known as Multi-Slot GPRS, is being heralded as the next great breakthrough for enabling the Internet to penetrate into the handset and palmtop palmtop or hand-held personal computer, lightweight, small, battery-powered, general-purpose programmable computer. It typically has a miniaturized full-function, typewriterlike keyboard for input and a small, full color, liquid-crystal display  markets effectively.

"The ML2020 will finally provide handset users sufficient speeds to surf the web, conduct e-business, and send and receive email and other data, without having to delete so much of the raw content," said Bryan Chase, corporate marketing manager at Mobilink. Currently, wireless products that connect to the Internet do so at about one-quarter to one-fifth of the speed that the ML2020 will allow.

"The speed that GPRS offers, coupled with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP (1) (Wireless Access Point) See access point.

(2) (Wireless Application Protocol) A standard for providing cellular phones, pagers and other handheld devices with secure access to e-mail and text-based Web pages.
), will allow the palm-top web market to really take off."

In addition to the multi-slot GPRS capability, standard features on the ML2020 include full GSM Phase II+ compliance, dual and tri-band radio interfaces, and a plethora of standard GSM phone handset accessories such as multi-voltage SIM, keypad A small keyboard or supplementary keyboard keys; for example, the keys on a calculator or the number/cursor cluster on a computer keyboard. Samples of the chip will be available early in 2000 with volume production beginning in Q3.

Advanced Handset Design

In order to allow manufacturers to make their own phones quickly, Mobilink offers Advanced Handset Reference Designs, which can be easily modified for final product differentiation Product Differentiation

. Mobilink designs are remarkable in their small size and ease of manufacturability. A typical handset based on a Mobilink design offers a competitive feature set and long standby time.

Other Mobilink chips include the ML2000, the first of the family of highly integrated GSM Baseband processors that has successfully completed Full GSM Phase II Dual Band Type Approval in a handset.

The follow-on ML2010 adds voice recognition and voice recording features. Mobilink Telecom develops, manufactures, and markets complete, leading-edge GSM handset solutions for manufacturers. For more information see www.mobilinktel.com
