) today announced the launch of SMART - a Satellite Mutual Aid Radio Talkgroup on MSV's nationwide push-to-talk satellite network, conceived and administered in conjunction with the US Department of Justice (DOJ (Department Of Justice) The legal arm of the U.S. government that represents the public interest of the United States. It is headed by the Attorney General. ), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), division of the U.S. Dept. of Justice charged with investigating all violations of federal laws except those assigned to some other federal agency.  (FBI).

The SMART program allows law enforcement and public safety officials authorized by DOJ to participate in a nationwide two-way satellite radio talkgroup. By using MSV's unique push-to-talk satellite technology, each group member can either listen to or join in the conversation taking place over the talkgroup. MSV is making this talkgroup available without additional cost to MSV's public safety customers.

"Reliable communications are critical during natural or man-made disasters, when wireline and terrestrial wireless systems might be inoperable inoperable /in·op·er·a·ble/ (in-op´er-ah-b'l) not susceptible to treatment by surgery.

," explains Larry D. Haughey, MSV Satellite Services group vice president for the government sector. "The addition of SMART will further improve the ability of first-responders and other government agencies to communicate and coordinate quickly and effectively in times of urgent need, regardless of location and infrastructure.

"SMART will serve as an important tool to supplement existing interoperable communications for law enforcement and public safety users at all levels of government," Haughey said. "All public safety related agencies with active accounts on the MSV network are eligible and encouraged to add this talkgroup to their service. This agreement with the DOJ takes on added importance in light of the Federal Communications Commission's recent order which requires the provision of at least one satellite-enabled device as part of the nationwide public safety broadband network in the 700MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  band," he added.

The reliability and versatility of MSV satellite services have been driving MSAT-G2 satellite radio sales since the MSAT-G2 was introduced in early 2006. This satellite radio supports a range of innovative point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communications solutions that include push-to-talk, push-to-track and voice services - addressing the increasing needs and demands of public safety and emergency response personnel.

Requests to participate in SMART should be sent to SMART@usdoj.gov.
