Borland Enhances Mobile Development Offerings;

C++BuilderX to Address Increased Business Demand

for Enterprise Mobile Applications

Borland Software Corporation (Nasdaq:BORL) announced today the launch of Borland(R) C++BuilderX(1),(TM) a new, pure C++ integrated development environment (IDE) featuring advanced enterprise mobile development capabilities, amidst broad industry support from organizations such as HP, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Symbian and Virtio(2). C++BuilderX is designed to assist the growing number of organizations that are extending their business infrastructures to include mobile applications and devices. It is also included as part of the latest Borland(R) Enterprise Studio for Mobile, also launched today, focused on application lifecycle management for the mobile market.

Fulfilling Market Need

According to research firm, Evans Data(3), C++ is the most popular language for mobile and embedded computing today. Corporate enterprise accounts for 28% of all wireless development with most effort focused around applications addressing mobile Email, Wireless Portals, Sales Force Automation, Mobile positioning and customer relationship management. Moreover, IDC(4) estimates that by the end of 2006, two thirds of the US worker population will be made up of people who are classified as mobile workers.

"Today, many developers are using complex, low level tools and libraries to deliver mobile applications. These development environments often hinder robust business application development," explained Rikki Kirzner, research director at analyst firm IDC. "A new environment offering business process support has the potential to help revolutionize the types of applications available for these workers in future."

IDC estimates that the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers including Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens and Sony Ericsson, who license the popular Symbian operating system; account for more than 70% of the mobile handset market, a prime target for commercial developers(5). Borland is an active member of the Symbian Enterprise Advisory Council (SEAC), helping to define new ways of aligning software capabilities with high-priority business consumer needs.

New Pure C++ IDE and Borland Enterprise Studio for Mobile

New features for enterprise mobile development incorporate integrated support for all Symbian(TM) Software Development Kits (SDKs) including Series 60 and 80, as well as first time support for the UIQ platform. Additionally, on-target debugging for mobile applications over Bluetooth;(TM) extensible SDK support for other mobile platforms and extended application lifecycle management help to ensure that software meets evolving business demands.

The C++BuilderX IDE is also incorporated in the latest Borland(R) Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) suite for mobile development, Enterprise Studio for Mobile, also launched today. The suite notably includes new application design modeling capabilities for C++ in the form of Borland(R) Together(R) for C++BuilderX.(TM)

To broaden the appeal of mobile enterprise development in C++, C++BuilderX also introduces Rapid Application Development (RAD) capabilities with a technology preview of a new visual designer. This allows component-based drag and drop development and easy access to internally developed and third party mobile component libraries. C++BuilderX and Enterprise Studio for Mobile will be available in September 2003.
