Mobil Introduces Lubricant for High-Performance Diesel Engines Manufactured by EMD.

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1997--Mobil Corp. Monday announced the introduction of a non-chlorine, non-zinc marine lubricant Lubricant

A gas, liquid, or solid used to prevent contact of parts in relative motion, and thereby reduce friction and wear. In many machines, cooling by the lubricant is equally important.
 for high-output diesel engines.

The company says Mobilgard(R) 450 NC (No Chlorine)(a) has been approved by General Motors Corporation's Electro-Motive Division (EMD EMD Electromechanical dissociation, see there ) and is recommended for diesel engines manufactured by Alco, Detroit Diesel, Fairbanks Morse and General Electric.

"Waste-oil disposal costs for chlorine-containing lubricants are expected to escalate in the near future," said John ReShore, Americas marine technical manager of Mobil. "Our goal was to develop a non-chlorine product for customers that was better than our existing Mobilgard 450 oil. Based on the results from lab and field testing, Mobilgard 450 NC accomplishes this goal."

Crowley Marine Services, Inc., a tug and barge company based in Jacksonville, Fla., extensively field tested the new lubricant for 8,000 hours in several invader class tugboats powered by EMD engines. Each of the test vessels operated under very severe load conditions for up to seven days between ports-of-call.

Lew Cascone, Crowley Marine Services, Inc.'s, manager of engineering, the lubricant was more effective than Mobil's previous formulation. "With Mobilgard 450 NC we noticed both a discernible decrease in air box deposits and an improvement in overall cleanliness in the top deck The term Top Deck can refer to a number of things:

 areas of our engines."

Results from the field test showed that Mobilgard 450 NC reduced the vessels' piston ring and cylinder liner wear 35 percent.

Mobilgard 450 NC is replacing Mobilgard 450 and is compatible with the previous formulation. The product's detergent/dispersant qualities increase filter life and engine cleanliness and its high alkalinity al·ka·lin·i·ty

Mobilgard 450 NC is formulated to meet the lubrication lubrication, introduction of a substance between the contact surfaces of moving parts to reduce friction and to dissipate heat. A lubricant may be oil, grease, graphite, or any substance—gas, liquid, semisolid, or solid—that permits free action of  requirements of heavily loaded marine diesel engines manufactured by EMD. It may also be used in other marine diesel engines of the highest horsepower or highest brake mean effective pressure (BMEP BMEP Brake Mean Effective Pressure ) using distillate dis·til·late

The engine oil meets the requirements of an SAE 40 grade marine diesel oil and is suitable wherever API CF and/or CF-2 performance is specified. This includes all Detroit Diesel 2-cycle engines.

Mobil has specialized in serving the lubrication needs of the marine industry since the 1880s. The company's marine lubricants and fuels are available worldwide, and are supported by a network of sales personnel and engineers in more than 100 countries. -0- (a) Mobilgard 450 NC contains less than 50 PPM chlorine and less than 10 PPM zinc.
