MobiCom Deploys State-of-the-Art Optical Network with Cisco Solution; Cisco Optical Multiservice Provisioning Platform Helps Enable MobiCom Simplify Services Delivery, Accelerate Innovation and Offer Ubiquitous Services.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Cisco Systems(R) (Nasdaq:CSCO) announced today that MobiCom, a Mongolian mobile communications service provider, has upgraded its Cisco(R) Internet Protocol Next-Generation Network (IP NGN) architecture by deploying an advanced optical solution using the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP). The new optical solution helps enable MobiCom to increase revenues by converging its mobile and Internet traffic into a unified optical transport platform.

MobiCom was the first company in Mongolia to be granted a global system for mobile communications (GSM) license a decade ago. MobiCom also operates as an Internet service provider (ISP) known as MobiNet. The MobiNet service helps enable MobiCom end-users and large enterprise customers use mobile IP telephony and Internet service throughout the country of Mongolia including the capital city of Ulaan Baatar.

"After careful review, we determined transition to an optical network from Cisco Systems would be a more efficient way to offload the increasing amounts of IP traffic from our legacy switch core," said Munkhbold Udval, director of Internet division, MobiCom Corporation. MobiCom replaced its leased asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) wide-area network (WAN) with Cisco's optical solution, using the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH MSPP to provide the high-speed connectivity and scalability needed to meet an ever-increasing transport of IP traffic. MobiCom is also installing Cisco Transport Manager, an advanced network management system that will help enable MobiCom to rapidly roll out and maintain revenue-generating, IP-based services such as MobiNet.
