Mitsubishi Offers Durable, Plastic Molded Laser Diode Modules for Fiber-In-The-Loop Applications; Cost-effective, easily manufacturable devices offer wide operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1997--The Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electronics America today announced a family of optical laser modules that are targeted for cost-effective fiber-in-the-loop (FitL), synchronous optical network (networking) Synchronous Optical NETwork - (SONET) A broadband networking standard based on point-to-point optical fibre networks. SONET will provide a high-bandwidth "pipe" to support ATM-based services.  (SONET) and passive optical network applications.

The family features a plastic molded package and a maximum tracking error of 1.5 dB across an operating temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. The family also offers signal line and package electrical isolation, high-speed response, and a choice of optical output power levels. The family is available with FC connector A fiber-optic cable connector that uses a threaded plug and socket. For bi-directional transmission, two fiber cables and two FC connectors are generally used. FC is specified by the TIA as FOCIS-4. See fiber-optic connectors and FOCIS.  and SC connector A fiber-optic cable connector that uses a push-pull latching mechanism similar to common audio and video cables. For bi-directional transmission, two fiber cables and two SC connectors (Dual SC) are generally used. SC is specified by the TIA as FOCIS-3.  options.

"The durable plastic molded package allows the devices to be produced at a substantial cost savings compared with traditional metal packages," said Mike Trapp, Mitsubishi Electronics' senior marketing manager for optoelectronic products. "As a result, they are easy to mass produce, making them an exceptional value for fiber-in-the-loop applications."

The optical laser module family's FU-170SLD (Second Level Domain) See Internet domain name.  series offers the FC connector option and FU-124SLD series offers the SC connector option. The FU-170SLD series and FU-124SLD series each have versions that feature 1 mW or 0.20 mW typical coupled fiber output power. The module family features a low typical threshold current of 6 mA and typical operating current of 9 mA.

Availability and pricing

Samples and production quantities of the FU-170SLD-F1M1 and FU-170SLD-F3M1 modules are available now. The FU-170SLD-F1M1 module sells for $80 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The FU-170SLD-F3M1 module sells for $60 each in 1,000-unit quantities. Samples of the FU-124SLD-F1M1 and FU-124SLD-F3M1 modules are available now, with production beginning at the end of the first quarter of 1997. The FU-124SLD-F1M1 module will sell for $96 each in 1,000-unit quantities. The FU-124SLD-F3M1 module will sell for $70 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
