Mitsubishi Extends Its Dominance in TV Market With Five New 8-Bit Microcontrollers; Mitsubishi Ships 27 Percent of the World's Television Microcontrollers.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1998--Strengthening its hold on television applications, the Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc. today announced five new microcontrollers for the North American market. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, parent company of Mitsubishi Electronics America, shipped 27 percent of the world's television microcontrollers in 1996, based on worldwide television market figures compiled by the Electronic Industries Association of Japan Founded in 1948, the Electronic Industries Association of Japan (EIAJ) was one of two Japanese electronics trade organizations that were merged into the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).  (EIAJ EIAJ Electronic Industries Association of Japan

"The fact that two-thirds of the top television manufacturers in North America are Mitsubishi microcontroller customers clearly shows that Mitsubishi is without peer in providing the best value for consumer appliance OEMs," said George Riehm, product marketing manager for TV microcontroller applications at Mitsubishi Electronics America. "These five new 8-bit products will meet customer needs even further by providing closed captioning and on-screen display functionality as well as Mitsubishi's unparalleled software support."

The new 8-bit television microcontrollers, with the product numbers M37270, M37271, M37272, M37273 and M37274, provide closed caption decoder (CCD) and on-screen display (OSD) functionality. Televisions marketed in the United States require CCD functionality to benefit the hearing impaired. OSD functionality allows end-users to make adjustments to the television by using on-screen menus.

A key aspect of CCD functionality is CCD core software developed by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The television microcontrollers also offer software tools that allow consumer television OEMs to develop their own custom fonts and choose the resolution of their color pallet for television applications. Mitsubishi provides extensive software support to consumer television OEMs throughout North America.

Development tools

Mitsubishi supplies OEMs with software tools for program development of its 8-bit microcontrollers. OEMs develop software using Mitsubishi's PC4701HS in-circuit hardware emulator, which comes with the PDB38 Windows(R) based debugger. Developers write software in assembly language by using Mitsubishi's SRA SrA

Systems' Embedded Workbench 740 C-Compiler. In addition, developers check assembly or C code by using IAR Systems' C-SPY 740 Debugger. Other third-party tools for developing software include Orion's ADViCE advanced in-circuit emulator. Additional third-party tools will be available in the third quarter of 1998. Mitsubishi's entire 8-bit microcontroller product line is available as standard mask ROM, one-time-programmable (OTP) ROM, and erasable-programmable ROM (EPROM EPROM

Packaging, availability and pricing

The M37270, M37271, M37272, M37273 and M37274 television microcontrollers are each available in 42-pin, 52-pin and 64-pin shrink dual in-line packages (SDIP See Shrink DIP and Skinny DIP. ) and 64-pin quad flat pack (QFP (Quad FlatPack) A square, surface mount chip package that has leads on all four sides and comes in several varieties. Pricing for the M37272 television microcontroller is $3.00 each in 100,000-unit quantities. -0- About Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Electronics America
