LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 2001

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America Inc. (MDEA MDEA 3,4-Methylenedioxy-N-Ethylamphetamine (empathogenic/psychedelic drug closely related to MDMA)

This D-VHS (Data-VHS) A VHS videocassette recorder that is able to store digital data such as MPEG-2 from a digital satellite system (DSS) or digital cable. It also includes S-VHS (Super-VHS) A VHS recording and playback system that increased resolution from 240 to 400 lines and used a higher-quality cassette. S-VHS introduced the S-video interface, which separated the luma from the color (see S-video).  analog VCR functionality, as well as HAVi -- Home Audio Video interoperability -- technology, that allows for sophisticated control via IEEE 1394 networks and 5C copy protection.

"Our D-VHS VCR is the perfect complement to the new Mitsubishi Integrated HDTVs," said Max Wasinger, MDEA vice president of sales and marketing. "The unique inclusion of HAVi in this product matches our commitment to HAVi in our integrated HDTVs, -- providing consumers with robust, simple control for unmatched ease-of-use."

"D-VHS is the unquestioned digital recording solution for the digital broadcast environment. While recordable DVD and PVR solutions are reaching the market, they do not offer the combined capability of HDTV-grade wide-bandwidth recording capability, removable media and two-plus hour recording times," said Robert A. Perry, MDEA vice president of marketing.

"While many digital recording solutions have been offered to consumers, this is the first consumer component that presents a full 28.2 megabits-per-second plus recording capability, which enables the recording of HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates  broadcasts from a digital connection -- the IEEE 1394.

"Unlike hard disk-based products, our D-VHS can record from the DTV MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). 2 format IEEE 1394 network source and keep that recording on a tape for archival and later viewing. And with the HAVi technology, it offers a superior interface capability over non-HAVi-based products," Perry added.

In separate news, MDEA announced its NetCommand(TM) analog/digital control technology, and its new product lineup. The company incorporates VividLogic's FireBus IEEE 1394 and HAVi software technology in its integrated digital television An Integrated Digital Television ("IDTV" or "iDTV") set is a television set with a built in digital tuner, be it for DVB-T, DVB-S, DVB-C, ATSC or ISDB.
