 by the end of 2002. To help reach that goal, a techsavvy group of students who were enrolled in ExplorNet's Computer Engineering program helped by assembling 196 new high-speed, multimedia machines.

The Computer Blitz Build is spearheaded by the educational non-profit ExplorNet, which brings together students, teachers and IT volunteers in an effort to bring state-of-the-art computers to schools that lag behind the technology curve.

Students enrolled in the tech classes are helping to build the computers. The program, which is in nearly 40 school districts, teaches students how to assemble new computers "from scratch" and to upgrade donated do·nate

High school teacher Lee Courtney says the program gives her students an advantage. "They gain a lot of self-esteem. They prove they have value because they can do something that a lot of other people can't do," Courtney says.

Eighteen-year-old Ashley Burbridge says, "It's great that other kids will get to use these computers, because they may not have access otherwise."

"I think it's a great idea that the governor had to put a computer in every school in the state," said 15-year-old student Seth Lirette.
