Missionaries killed in 1997.

, reports that in 1997, 68 Catholic missionaries were killed worldwide. In 1996, 48 priests and sisters were murdered. The 1997 figure is high because it includes 40 seminarians slaughtered at the minor seminary A Minor Seminary is a secondary boarding school created for the specific purpose of enrolling teenage boys who have expressed interest in becoming priests. They are generally Roman Catholic institutions, and designed to prepare boys both academically and spiritually for vocations  in Buta, Burundi, in April, 1997. Most of the other 28 victims were also Catholics of African origin: 8 from Rwanda, 6 from Congo and 1 from Nigeria.
