Updated Version Addresses Enterprise Need

for Migrating Non-Scripted Applications and Settings

and Multiple User Profiles

Miramar Systems, a global leader in networking and utility software development, announced today it has released Desktop DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
DNA
 or deoxyribonucleic acid

One of two types of nucleic acid (the other is RNA); a complex organic compound found in all living cells and many viruses. It is the chemical substance of genes.
Version 2.5, the latest upgrade to its five-star rated system migration software solution.

On display in the company's booth at Comdex (No. L243), the new version includes performance improvements to its user settings, applications and file migration capabilities, particularly for multiple users, and non-scripted applications and application settings. Desktop DNA is technology driven by scripts that communicate the migration of applications and application settings from one personal computer to another. Version 2.5 now automates this process for non-scripted applications and settings with its new Muscle Migration feature. Miramar is the only company to offer this feature in its system migration solution.

Desktop DNA is a software solution that allows users to migrate customized settings, applications and files between like or different computers and Windows operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. . Migration programs designed to roll out thousands of PCs running a new operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
typically present enormous operating challenges, costs and risks for large enterprises. Desktop DNA eases this by automating system migrations, and retaining end users' application and OS customizations.

Since its original release, Desktop DNA has been employed by Fortune 500 companies nationwide, including Eastman Chemical and Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony . Desktop DNA presently resides on nearly 500,000 desktops. Miramar Systems estimates Desktop DNA will be used to migrate upward of more than; above.

"Miramar developed Desktop DNA technology to provide customers a quick, easy and reliable system migration," said Greg Goodman, vice president of Product Development, Miramar. "Desktop DNA accomplishes this goal by eliminating the labor-intensive task of manually reapplying individual desktop settings, applications and data files. Not only does it save companies time and money as they upgrade and expand their systems, it frees up IT administrators' time, reduces help desk calls and ultimately increases end user satisfaction. With Version 2.5, we have taken the program to the next level, enhancing the technology and features, and ultimately, the user's experience, for a highly effective system migration."

One of Version 2.5's most prominent new features is Muscle Migration, an all-encompassing script feature that captures registry and directory information about all applications installed on the PC. It then compiles a list that can be edited by the user to direct where these applications and scripts are migrated to on the target machine. Muscle Migration can move most applications, even those for which it does not have an application-specific script written. This provides users a flexible program that is able to move a variety of applications without creating a specific script for them, or without the need to select each individual application to migrate.

Multi-User Migration is another new feature of Desktop DNA Version 2.5. Because users share one machine in many enterprise environments, one system may have hundreds of local or domain user profiles residing on it. Multi-User Migration eliminates an administrator's task of migrating one user profile at a time by enabling him to select all or specific users to migrate simultaneously, thus decreasing the time allotted al·lot

 to each machine.

Additionally, an administrator can migrate one or multiple user profiles without knowing a user's password. This is particularly helpful when an enterprise-wide OS deployment or hardware upgrade is scheduled or after-hours migrations are executed. The administrator simply assigns a temporary password to the source machine, eliminating end user intervention and keeping the user's profile information secure.

"As we help our customers migrate to Windows 2000, Desktop DNA allows us to provide a seamless migration to the end user by moving application settings and data files, increasing the value to our customers," said Rick Davis

Desktop DNA V.2.5 Technology Improvements:
-- DDNA Compiler is a speed-enhancing feature that compiles Desktop DNA
scripts, saving memory space on the PC and providing language localization
capabilities.

-- DDNA Filters Plus is an organizing feature that improves Desktop DNA's
Filter function. Now, a user can migrate files by type, size or creation date,
and select his/her destination on the target machine. This is a useful feature
to organizations that are standardizing how its users organize and store files.

-- DDNA Command Lines is a rich feature set that includes a series of switches
for automating migrations. Version 2.5 Command Lines upgrades includes Exit,
the ability to exit out of DDNA upon completion of a migration, and Reboot, the
option to reboot on a newly set-up PC.

Script Enhancements to Desktop DNA V.2.5:

-- Sharepoint Settings is a new script that enables

administrators to migrate sharepoint settings for a directory

or file that is shared among multiple users.

-- Cross OS Printers prevents administrators and end users from

having to reinstall To go through the installation process once again, because files have become corrupted. See reload.  or reconfigure printer settings when

moving and installing new printer drivers and settings from

one Windows OS to another. As an added time saver, an

administrator also can dictate the location of the migrated

drivers on the target machine if they're not installed on the

destination system.

-- RAS (1) See network access server.

(2) (Remote Access Service) A Windows NT/2000 Server feature that allows remote users access to the network from their Windows laptops or desktops via modem. See RRAS and network access server.
Setup maintains end user dial-up settings and phone book

entries when migrating from one system to another. Thanks to

this new script, support for mobile users has never been

better.
