SANTA BARBARA Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 2001

Miramar Systems, the world's leader of PC-to-Mac networking interoperability announced today its extending Apple's and Microsoft's digital media initiatives with its newest release of PC MACLAN: Version 7.2.1 for Windows 95/98/Me.

This upgrade provides seamless compatibility between users of Windows 9.x and Apple OS X.1, allowing them to maximize the use of digital media devices to both operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. Combined with Miramar's upgrade to PC MACLAN for NT/2K/XP and Microsoft's recent news that it's discontinuing support for AppleTalk printers with its XP release, Miramar's PC MACLAN line of products become a critical utility for users running a mixed platform network and are using their respective operating systems as a "digital" hub.

For months, Apple and Microsoft have been promoting the value of using their respective operating systems and desktops as a hub for processing or publishing digital media, such as MP3 players, DVDs, CDRs and printers.

With the advent of PC MACLAN for 95/98/Me, Miramar customers are now able to take this usage to another level. They can share digital media initiatives between the disparate platforms, translating into significant cost savings and greater flexibility within a networked environment. Whether users are running Windows or Macs, they can share digital media devices between across PCs and Macs or a mixed network.

About PC MACLAN

PC MACLAN v.7.2.1 supports AFP (1) (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) The file sharing protocol used in an AppleTalk network. In order for non-Apple networks to access data in an AppleShare server, their protocols must translate into the AFP language. See file sharing protocol.  (AppleTalk File Protocol) over IP as well as AppleTalk to provide machines running Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me (Windows Millennium Edition) An upgrade to Windows 98 introduced in 2000. Windows ME added more support for digital cameras, multi-player Internet games and home networking.  the ability to connect to AppleShare servers and Macintosh workstations. This allows a user to connect over the Internet or on a local area network at the fastest possible speed.

With the file server supporting IP, PC MACLAN allows users to transfer large documents at faster rates. This is of particular interest to PC MACLAN's core markets: pre-press, publishing and graphic design, where the use of digital media, large file access and transfers are critical to the business.

Additionally, PC MACLAN has enhanced its cross-platform suite with support for Ghostscript. This third-party utility provides Mac users with the ability to print to any non-PostScript printer attached to the network. It also offers PostScript compatibility for users who need to print to non-Postscript printers attached to a PC (with PC MACLAN installed) on the network. Ghostscript converts Postscript-formatted files to non-PostScript and sends the job to the Windows print queue Disk space that holds output designated for the printer until the printer can receive it. .

"As the industry leader in PC-to-Mac connectivity, Miramar is committed to providing "State of the Market" solutions. The timely addition of OS X.1 support gives users' ever increased convenience and flexibility when accessing and transferring data between Windows and Macintosh systems," explained Mike Sheffey, Miramar Systems' Vice President of Worldwide Sales.

PC MACLAN for Windows 95/98/Me also includes these file compatibility utilities for free: PC Migrator, A.K.A. and MacOpener by DataViz.
