), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today introduced a highly integrated passive optical networking (PON) solution that uses the company's proprietary Eye-Minder dual digital closed-loop technology to optimize performance at the lowest possible cost by compensating for laser aging and temperature effects in fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP (Fiber To The Premises) The installation of optical fiber from the carrier directly into the home or office. Also called "fiber to the home" (FTTH). See PON and FTTC. See also FTP. ) applications.

Mindspeed's M02090 is the company's latest physical media dependent (PMD) product for the growing FTTP market, and integrates a burst-mode laser driver with a limiting amplifier to deliver up to 2.5 Gbps data rates in optical network units/terminals (ONU/ONT) used in passive optical networks. The M02090's advanced Eye-Minder technology reduces overall system costs by providing for the real time monitoring of, and compensation for, laser aging and temperature effects. The M02090 addresses broadband PON, (BPON See PON. ), Gigabit Ethernet PON (GEPON GEPON Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network

) and gigabit PON (GPON See PON. ) applications with a single, versatile solution.

"We understand the industry's needs for a highly versatile solution, and we have worked hard to deliver it with the M02090," said Hasnain Bajwa, director of marketing for Mindspeed. "The M02090 integrated burst-mode driver and limiting amplifier will support BPON, GEPON and GPON and provide a single, extremely versatile solution for facilitating the industry's deployment of FTTP solutions. With a unique dual-loop architecture, the M02090 offers our customers significant performance and overall system cost advantages compared to existing solutions."

Mindspeed offers a broad range of PMD devices for equipment designed for next-generation networks including transimpedance amplifiers (TIA (1) (Telecommunications Industry Association, Arlington, VA, www.tiaonline.org) A membership organization founded in 1988 that sets telecommunications standards worldwide. It was originally an EIA working group that was spun off and merged with the U.S. ), laser drivers and limiting amplifiers, covering data rates from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps, in support of synchronous optical network (networking) Synchronous Optical NETwork - (SONET) A broadband networking standard based on point-to-point optical fibre networks. SONET will provide a high-bandwidth "pipe" to support ATM-based services.  (SONET), synchronous digital hierarchy (communications, standard) Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - (SDH) An international digital telecommunications network hierarchy which standardises transmission around the bit rate of 51.84 megabits per second, which is also called STS-1.  (SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) The European counterpart to SONET. Technical Details:

The M02090 is a highly integrated, programmable burst-mode laser driver and limiting amplifier intended for ONU/ONT applications up to 2.5Gbps. Capable of independently driving 100 milliamps (mA) of modulation current and 80mA of bias current, the laser driver in the M02090 can independently control bias and modulation currents via a dual closed loop that maintains the target extinction ratio by compensating for laser aging, temperature and voltage changes. The device also supports operation in average closed-loop and open-loop configurations.

The limiting amplifier inputs in the M02090 have selectable bandwidth. The input sensitivity is less than 3mV at 1.25 Gbps, and less than 6mV at 2.5 Gbps. Extra design margin can be achieved if used in conjunction with the Mindspeed's M0201X family of TIAs. The positive emitter-coupled logic Positive emitter-coupled logic, or PECL, is a further development of the emitter-coupled logic (ECL) technology and requires a positive 5V supply instead of a negative -5V supply.  (PECL PECL PEAR (PHP Extension and Application Repository) Extended Code Language
PECL Principles of European Contract Law

) differential outputs achieve full swing at the minimum specified input signal. The limiting amplifier features a programmable loss of signal, a received signal strength indicator and a JAM function which can be used to squelch chatter on the outputs when no signal is present.

The many features of the M02090 can be accessed through a two-wire interface by an external microcontroller, or the device can operate independently with an external EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM) A rewritable memory chip that holds its content without power. Although EEPROMs spawned flash memory, EEPROMs are byte addressable at the write level, whereas flash chips must erase a block of bytes before rewriting. . The device is offered in a compact 32 pin, 5mm X 5mm QFN package and is specified over an extended operating temperature range of -40 degrees C to +100 degrees C.

Availability

Sample quantities and evaluation boards are available now. Volume production is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2006, and the device will be priced at $4 in volumes of 1,000.
