 Cable Television Operators

Secure methods for cable operators to protect valuable content -- both for subscription television and the Internet -- is the theme of Mindport's "Security Pavilion" exhibit at NCTA 2000 in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded .

Mindport's Irdeto Access division, a world leader in conditional access Conditional Access (acronymized CA) is the protection of content by requiring certain criteria to be met before granting access to this content. The term is commonly used in relation to digital television systems, most notably satellite television.  (CA) technology, will demonstrate how its technology can be deployed by cable operators for traditional pay-TV applications at the head-end and in the subscriber's home. Cable operators will see firsthand how Irdeto Access' OpenCable(R) point of deployment (POD) module can be used to extend content protection beyond the set-top box to the customer's personal computer. Mindport will also showcase exciting developments in the area of Internet content protection -- both for multicast and addressable Reachable. When something is addressable, it can be identified and manipulated independently of its surroundings. For example, screen pixels and RAM memory are addressable. Each of the screen's picture elements can be individually turned on and off, and each of the memory's bytes can be  unicast IP environments.

"It's an exciting time for American cable operators who wish to add interactive services and create new revenue streams for their business," said Jock Anderson, chief executive officer of Mindport Inc. "But key to the success of these digital technologies is effective, user friendly protection for premium content. Mindport's 'Security Pavilion' is designed to assemble -- in a single exhibit -- several proven, cost effective CA options that can help operators dramatically expand their business opportunities."

Technologies on display at the Mindport "Security Pavilion" include:

M-Crypt -- scalable digital CA for pay-TV networks

M-Crypt is a compact, flexible conditional access system A conditional access system (CAS) is a system by which electronic transmission of digital media, especially satellite television signals through cable, is limited to subscribed clients. This is called conditional access.  that enables cable operators to migrate their operations to digital technology. M-Crypt grows with the operator's business, enabling them to start with a small number of subscribers and then easily scales up to accommodate even the largest cable systems. M-Crypt also includes add-on modules for IPPV IPPV

OpenCable(R) Point of Deployment (POD) removable security

Mindport's Irdeto Access, with its proven CA technology is an active participant in the OpenCable process. In accordance with FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  and CableLabs requirements, Mindport Irdeto Access' POD enables CA functionality to be separated from the set-top box or other broadband reception device where it has traditionally been embedded. Irdeto Access has participated successfully in all the rounds of POD interoperability testing co-ordinated by CableLabs. The Irdeto Access POD module will enable new service opportunities for cable operators, including the ability to extend cable content offerings to the personal computer. At NCTA, the Irdeto Access POD will be demonstrated on a PC equipped with a new OpenCable Device Bay PC receiver developed by Microsoft and SCM (1) (Software Configuration Management, Source Code Management) See configuration management.

 Microsystems.

CypherCast -- Digital conditional access for multicast Internet applications

CypherCast creates a Virtual Private Multicast Network (VPMN VPMN Visited Public Mobile Network ) that can be used in combination with any streaming media application. CypherCast works independently of network equipment, allowing it to be integrated with any IP routing technology. Potential applications are endless and can include distance learning, corporate training, business TV, data caching and entertainment services. For example, users of a corporate-owned VPMN can include a firm's executives, employees, business partners, customers and suppliers. CypherCast allows the operator to group users, authorizing various levels of access to multicast content.

Entriq -- Secure streaming media for the Internet

Entriq enables cable operators and other network providers to create a secure streaming media platform for the Internet. Entriq is designed to guarantee content security across distributed networks as the content travels from concept to consumer, ensuring that content owners receive payment for its use. Entriq is equally appropriate for live content streams such as a sporting event and stored streams such as a feature film.

With Entriq, operators will be able to manage access to content on a pay-per-view, pay-per-time or subscription basis. Entriq also provides the ability to geographically segment content distribution across the Internet. Entriq is designed to be deployed using a distributed architecture that allows content to be delivered to millions of simultaneous viewers.
