Millipore Corporation (NYSE: MIL) founded in 1954, listed among the S&P 500 since the early 1990s, is an international biosciences company, known widely for its micrometer pore-size filters and tests. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange : MIL) and Applied Biosystems (NYSE: ABI Abi (ā`bī) [short for Abijah], in the Bible, King Hezekiah's mother. (Application Binary Interface) A specification for a specific hardware platform combined with the operating system. ), an Applera Corporation business, today announced the availability of the MALDIspot(TM) Kit, which is expected to improve the sensitivity of mass spectrometry mass spectrometry or mass spectroscopy Analytic technique by which chemical substances are identified by sorting gaseous ions by mass using electric and magnetic fields. (MS) by maximizing peptide recovery during sample preparation of gel spots. The kit is the second in a series of MS sample preparation products being developed through a proteomics partnership between Millipore and Applied Biosystems. The MALDIspot Kit includes the new ZipPlate(R) micro-SPE plate, the first 96-well sample preparation tool for destaining, digesting, and concentrating proteins from either 1D or 2D gels in a single plate. Also included is an apparatus that allows direct elution elution /elu·tion/ (e-loo´shun) in chemistry, separation of material by washing; the process of pulverizing substances and mixing them with water in order to separate the heavier constituents, which settle out in solution, from the of purified peptides onto an Applied Biosystems MALDI MALDI Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization target insert in a matrix solution of only 1-2 uL. The insert is then placed into a sled, which is compatible with all Voyager-DE(TM) workstations, as well as the QSTAR QSTAR Quantitative Structure-Time-Activity Relationships (R) XL Hybrid LC/MS/MS System with oMALDI(TM) source. Additional kit components include Applied Biosystems MALDI target inserts, a vacuum manifold adapter, sled, and cleaning solution. By eliminating all sample transfer steps, the MALDIspot Kit is expected to maximize sample recovery, allow detection of lower abundance proteins in gels, and accelerate the entire process. With ZipPlate devices, 8-96 samples can be processed in just seven hours, more than twice as fast as the 16 hours that traditional methods require. The device is configured for manual or automated use. Automation protocols are available from Millipore.
