Millions in sad farewell to Alma.
There was a 1000 megawatt demand on the National Grid as more than 400,000 kettles went on the boil after the emotion-filled episode.
An estimated 15 million viewers watched Alma Halliwell lose her battle against cervical cancer.
In her final moments Alma, played by Amanda Barrie, lay ashen-faced in Audrey Roberts' house as her close friends said their goodbyes.
At her deathbed were ex-husband Mike Baldwin, played by Johnny Briggs, former lover Ken Barlow (Bill Roache) Mike's wife Linda (Jacqueline Chadwick) and Curly Watts, played by Kevin Kennedy.
Alma's distraught best pal Audrey, actress Sue Nicholls, and her daughter Gail Platt (Helen Worth) also broke down as she passed away.
A National Grid spokesman said: "Soaps normally average between 400 and 600 megawatts, so it was a considerable increase.
"But Phil Mitchell's shooting in EastEnders clocked up 2500 megawatts."
Alma's death was the latest in a line of hard-hitting Corrie plots designed to boost viewing figures followed the rape of Toyah Battersby.
Her emotion filled funeral will be screened later this week and Mike and Audrey will travel to the Lake District to scatter her ashes.
