Millions get joy of texts.

Byline: By MAEVE QUIGLEY

IRELAND went text-crazy yesterday as millions of people used their fingers to wish friends a Happy New Year.

Mobile phone networks reported a bumper number of texts sent over the Christmas period.

A spokeswoman for Meteor said: "At New Year alone more than 15.4 million texts were sent and 10.7 million of those were sent between 6pm on New Year's Eve and 6am on New Year's Day.

Celtic rockers The Pogues topped the festive download chart.

The spokeswoman added: "The Pogues' Fairytale Of New York continued as the most popular download...while Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas came in a close second."
