Milliken Hosts 23rd Annual Eye Opener Cross Country Meet.


SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The 23rd annual Eye Opener Cross Country Meet will take place this Saturday, Sept. 9, at 8 a.m., on the Roger Milliken Roger Milliken (born October 24, 1915) is a U.S. textile heir, whose grandfather founded a small textile company, and as a "factor" ended up acquiring financially strapped cotton mills as well as failed department stores that eventually were merged into the Mercantile Department  Center grounds in Spartanburg. More than 2,500 male and female collegiate and high school athletes from 108 schools from six states -- South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. Through a partnership with Fila, an elite Italian sports brand, Milliken will provide their signature VisaEndurance(R) brand of odor-fighting, moisture-wicking T-shirts to the top 15 men and women racers in various categories. Event volunteers will also receive the Fila-donated shirts, and the Eye Opener race T-shirts are available for sale to the public during the event for $20.

; and Julia Stamps, a four time Junior National Champion and eight time All American running champion, will be speaking to the young runners at the Radisson Hotel the night before the Eye Opener.

Previously held at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, this is the seventh year the Eye Opener race has been run on Milliken's corporate campus. The Eye Opener takes place at the arboretum arboretum: see botanical garden.

He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he was a scholarship athlete in track and field, specializing in the high jump, triple jump and 400 meters.

The starting times for each race division are as follows:

8:00 am - Collegiate Women 5K

8:15 am - Collegiate Men 6K race

9:15 am - Boys' Junior Varsity junior varsity

Results will be available at the conclusion of each race.

Individual runners will also be able to track their time by utilizing a timing chip. Each runner will have a chip placed on their shoe, which will track each racer's time by sensors that will be placed at both the start line and finish line of the race. This is first cross country meet in the state to utilize this technology.

Admission is free and parking is available in designated lots on the Milliken property, or along the frontage/access road which parallels Highway 176/585 (Pine St.).
