Gideon, a new boy at a posh prep school, is smart but not wealthy. Drinking, drugs, sex, cliques and hierarchies are all givens in prep school life. Getting a classroom education is a byproduct by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct

. Gideon is still a virgin, or "half a virgin." Thus, his most significant dilemma is when and how he can get laid. By chance, he rooms with the two most handsome girl magnets on campus. They devise a bet--which girl in his league, or slightly beyond, can he get to have sex with him by October 31? Gideon naturally first goes for the hottest girl on campus, though he has committed himself via the bet to having sex with a girl who's merely pretty, smart and funny.

The twist here is that the narrative voice is a girl inside Gideon's head who reads his thoughts and comments upon them. Will he display hidden depths of character? The narrator NARRATOR. The girl's voice is wise and irreverent. The book's great virtue is that it purports to tell the male point of view, which is, according to according to
