March 20, 1980

The first Genie Awards were broadcast from the Royal Alexandra Theatre The Royal Alexandra Theatre is a theatre in Toronto, Ontario Canada located near King and Simcoe Streets. Built in 1907, the Royal Alex is the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America[1].  in Toronto and hosted by Canadian actor Bruno Gerussi.

The Changeling, produced by Garth Drabinsky and Joel Michaels, and directed by Peter Medak, was the Best Motion Picture winner.

Meatballs won the first Golden Reel Award.

Mordecai Richler won the first Outstanding Screenplay Genie in 1980 for The Wordsrnith.

1981

French cinema dominated the 2nd Annual Genie Awards with the film Les Boris Debarras winning eight awards.

October 28

An independent newcomer, Atlantis Films, gained attention in 1981 by beating out the National Film Board and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation “Radio-Canada” redirects here. For the French language TV arm of the CBC, see Télévision de Radio-Canada.

1982

The ACC board of directors now held 17 members, elected annually by the membership to represent the various craft branches and three honorary appointments.

1983

ACC put out its first publication, a book called "The Shape of Rage" edited by Piers Handling--a critical review of the works of science-fiction and horror film master, David Cronenberg.

ACC office in Montreal established.

1984

The National Apprenticeship Training Program was established as the first professional development program of the Academy.

David Cronenberg won his first Genie for Best Direction for Videodrome--he has since gone on to win 10 in Direction and Screenplay categories.

1985

May 30--ACC officially became the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (ACCT ACCT Cardiology A clinical trial–Amlodipine Cardiovascular Community Trial–that evaluated the effect of sex and age on response to the antihypertensive, amlodipine. See Amlodipine, Antihypertensive, Hypertension. ), with the establishment of a television division, announced at a press conference by then-ACCT chairman, Robert Lantos, head of Alliance Communications.

Vancouver office of ACCT established.

March 21--The Genie Awards moved to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Metro Toronto Convention Centre, located in Downtown Toronto, Ontario at 255 Front Street West, has 600,000 square feet of space. The convention centre was completed in October 1984 and is home to the 1330 seat John Bassett Theatre, currently used for Canadian Idol. , giving the John Bassett Theatre The John W.H. Bassett Theatre is located in the heart of Toronto, Ontario's entertainment district.

The 1,330 seat (840 Orchestra Level, 490 Balcony Level), multi-purpose theatre is a self-contained venue within the Metro Toronto Convention Centre's North Building.

1986

April 21--The Gemini Awards sculpture was unveiled with design by Canadian Artist, Scott Thornley.

December 3, 4--The first Gemini Awards were broadcast by the CBC from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Anne of Green Gables swept the first Gemini Awards with 10 wins.

"The Genies Welcome The World" was the slogan--all participants, including foreign actors and actresses, could compete equally in all categories.

The Care Bears Movie won the Golden Reel Award--it broke box-office records for a Canadian animated film and was the highest grossing animated feature ever produced outside Disney Studios at that time.

1987

February 1--The first French television award, named the Prix Gemeaux, was held at Studio 42 of Radio-Canada in Montreal.

Le Decline de L'empire Americain swept the Genies with 13 nominations and--after worldwide recognition at Cannes, New York Film Critics and being the first Canadian film to be nominated as Best Foreign Film at the Oscars--the sequel, Les Invasions Barbares followed suit in 2004 with the first win at the Oscars for a Canadian film.

Un Zoo la Nuit took the lead with 13 wins--the most Genie wins for a film since their inception.

1988

Launch of The Breakfast Club Speaker Series in Toronto and Vancouver. The Multiculturalism Award was created for the Geminis--the same year Canada became the first country to enshrine en·shrine   also in·shrine

 its multiculturalism policy in legislation. It was established to honor excellence in television programming that reflects racial issues and cultural diversity in Canada. The first recipient was Degrassi Junior High Degrassi Junior High is a Canadian television teen drama series that was produced from 1987-1989 as part of the Degrassi series. The show followed the lives of a group of students attending the titular fictional school. . The name of the award was eventually changed in 1992 to the Canada Award.

1989

Genies' most challenging year, which demonstrated ACCT dedication. The awards had to move to the Westin Harbour Castle due to a conflict with the John Bassett Theatre's scheduling. Seven days before the show, CBC members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE, French: Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique) is a Canadian trade union serving the public sector - although it has in recent years organized workplaces in the non-profit and para-public sector as well.  went on strike, leaving the ACCT to independently produce the awards and put an entirely new stage and set elements into place. Forty-five minutes before the show, a bomb threat was phoned in but was thoroughly investigated and the awards got the green light to move forward. The awards went on with David Cronenberg sweeping with Dead Ringers.

1990

The key member benefit of free Canadian films and free Oscar nominated films at all Cineplex and Famous Players locations in Canada, was launched.

The Gemini Awards expanded from two days to three days to further recognize the industry. It was the first time all the awards were broadcast--the first two nights on YTV YTV Pääkaupunkiseudun Yhteistyövaltuuskunta (Finnish: Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council)

1991

Launch of the TV conference TV91: Defining the Future of Television.

1993

December 12--The Genie Awards were held in Montreal and broadcast live on Radio-Canada's national French Language service from their studio 42.

Vancouver filmmaker John Pozer won the first Claude Jutra Award for his first feature film, The Grocer's Wife.

1994

Atom Egoyan won his first Genies for his sixth film, Exotica ex·ot·i·ca

. He won for Best Motion Picture, Best Direction and Original Screenplay--the film itself won eight awards. He was nominated 11 times previously.

1995

This Hour Has 22 Minutes This Hour Has 22 Minutes is a weekly Canadian television comedy that airs on CBC Television. Launched in 1993 during Canada's 35th general election, the show focuses on Canadian politics, combining news parody, sketch comedy and satirical editorials.  received its first nominations and wins and went on to receive 53 nominations to date with 25 wins--the most nominations and wins in Gemini history for a single television program.

1997

Maria Topalovich, marketing and communications director with the Academy in Toronto, became president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of ACCT.

2003

Night one of the Gemini Awards was renamed Gemini Documentary, News and Sports Gala.

2004

Genie Awards moved to CHUM's Star!, Bravo!, CityTV and MusiMax as well as Access and Atlantic Satellite Network Atlantic Satellite Network (ASN) is a Canadian English language cable television channel serving Atlantic Canada owned by CTVglobemedia, with its studios located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. .

Genie Awards aired the first iTV Enhanced broadcast of an Awards show in Canadian history with partners Xenophile Media, Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund and Bell ExpressVU.
