In mid-September they sponsored a gathering of women to celebrate a partnership between labor doulas, childbirth educators, and hospital staff. Much to our surprise, the hospital hostesses completely eliminated any mention of the medical model. This gathering incorporated spirituality and guided meditation.

Leading this extraordinary event was Native American Elder, Terry Nagel, whose Native American name is Eagle Woman. Eagle Woman has spent time living with the Mayan Indians in Yucatan and Guatemala. She has extensive knowledge about Native American lifestyles and culture and has been honored with teaching on many levels.

These teachings were followed by pipe and fire ceremonies. Eagle Woman blessed each attendee while we gathered tobacco, lavender, and sage into our palms, making our own personal bundle. These individual blessings proved to support our own sacred vision quest vision quest

We were proud to be a part of this groundbreaking event. Because of this event, Waukesha Memorial Hospital now provides information about labor assistants to all women who will birth at their hospital and have also put into place a labor assistant referral service available through their twenty-four hour Nurse On Line service.
