Midwest grounds 13 MD-80s

Midwest Airlines is grounding 13 MD-80s to re-inspect a wiring harness, the same issue that has resulted in more than 2,400 flight cancellations at American Airlines.

Midwest Airlines voluntarily canceled all of its flights involving MD-80s to make sure the wiring component is in compliance with a recent Federal Aviation Administration directive.

FAA inspectors have been boosting their scrutiny of airline compliance with safety rules this week. The agency warned American Airlines that nearly half its planes could violate a fire safety regulation.

Midwest spokesman Mike Brophy says the airline's MD-80s inspected by the FAA were cleared to fly, but Midwest executives decided all 13 planes should be re-inspected by the airline's own personnel.

At least 10 Midwest flights were canceled by Thursday morning.
