Clinton Hill's residents, at least, will be able to breath easier soon thanks to the installation of 13 natural gas-powered microturbines that will allow the complex to turn off its dirty old oil heaters in the summer, when they've previously been used to generate hot water. "The system enables the summer shutdown of the north campus boilers--when air pollution is at its worst--and provides year-round electricity along with hot water to more than 700 of Clinton Hill's 1221 cooperative apartments. This project benefits residents of the entire community, by reducing fine particle pollution in a city in which high levels of childhood asthma are a growing problem," said Debbi Edelstein, director of Clean Air Communities (CAC See Consumer Advisory Council. ), which provided $400,000 in project funding through its partnership with Consolidated Edison. Proponents say microturbines are more efficient than traditional forms of power and heat generation and have the benefit of being an "off the grid" power supply. This means buildings with microturbines or other methods of what is known as "cogeneration" or "co-gen" will fare better in the event of a blackout. At Clinton Hill Apartments, The 13 dual-purpose microturbine units will produce electricity and hot water for the buildings. The co-gen units will displace number-6 oil boilers for hot water production, saving energy and reducing air pollution. The units will generate 540 kW to provide supplemental power to seven of the buildings in the 13-building complex.
