The addition of these new vendors marks a major milestone for Stardust, which in its first twelve months of operation has signed twenty-two of the Internet's most significant players.

As new members, the companies will work with Stardust engineers to perform rigorous WinSock interoperability testing on pre-release versions of their Internet hardware and software products.

The Stardust WinSock Labs are managed by Martin Hall, Stardust's Chief Technology Officer and one of the creators of the WinSock API. Hall is also the founding and present chairman of the WinSock Group, the loosely structured industry coalition that in 1993 created the widely adopted WinSock 1.1 API specification, which is used to Internet-enable Windows software applications.

"We're extremely pleased to welcome Microsoft, Cisco, and Quarterdeck as valued members of the Stardust WinSock Labs," said Hall. "Their commitment to WinSock will help ensure that present and future generations of Internet applications provide the transparent communications interoperability that IS managers and end-users have come to expect from WinSock." -0-

"The Stardust WinSock Labs provide an indispensable service to the developers of Internet applications," said Karen Milne, president and co-founder of Stardust Technologies. "We've created a secure lab environment staffed by some of the leading independent experts on WinSock. Internet software developers -- many of whom are competitors -- can come together and confidently cooperate on the interoperability issues that are so important to the end-user community."

Stardust, Microsoft, and Intel to Co-Host First WinSock 2 Interoperability Bake-Off

The services provided by the Stardust WinSock Labs will become increasingly important as application vendors begin to utilize the WinSock 2.0 API, which contains considerably more functionality and complexity than the current WinSock 1.1. The new members will work with existing Stardust members and sponsors to further the interoperability of all WinSock 1.1 and 2.0 products and services.

Microsoft is expected to release the first version of the WinSock 2.0 Software Developers Kit (SDK (Software Developer's Kit) See developer's toolkit and Windows SDK.

In late March, Stardust, Microsoft, and Intel will co-sponsor the first WinSock 2.0 Bake-Off, where early WinSock 2.0 developers can test the interoperability of their applications and protocol specifications. The event, which is expected to draw participation from several dozen ISVs, will be hosted at Stardust's facilities and will be open to all software developers.
