Microsemi Introduces New InGaAs/InP Photodetectors For 1310nm and 1550nm Fiber Optic Applications.

Business Editors

SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 2000
-- Now sampling complete line for 156mb to 10gb per second products

-- Company on time with product rollout schedule

-- Company expands its expertise in compound semiconductors

Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq: MSCC MSCC Motlow State Community College (Lynchburg, TN)
MSCC Morgan Sports Car Club
MSCC Manila Sports Car Club
MSCC Mission Springs Community Church (Fremont, CA)
MSCC Mazda Sports Car Club
) announced today that it has begun sampling parts from a second family of high speed gallium arsenide photodetectors for fiber optic applications.

Designated the MXP MXP

In currencies, this is the abbreviation for the Mexican Peso.

Notes:
The currency market, also known as the Foreign Exchange market, is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily average volume of over US $1 trillion.
4000 Series, the new indium phosphide-based indium gallium arsenide Indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) is a semiconductor composed of indium, gallium and arsenic. It is used in high-power and high-frequency electronics because of its superior electron velocity with respect to the more common semiconductors silicon and gallium arsenide.  photo detectors are designed specifically for fiber optic transponder A receiver/transmitter on a communications satellite. It receives a microwave signal from earth (uplink), amplifies it and retransmits it back to earth at a different frequency (downlink). A satellite has several transponders.  modules and hybrids in the 1310nm to 1550nm spectral range.

The four new devices feature a breakdown voltage of 20 volts, with bandwidth options from 156 Mb/sec to 10Gb/sec. Initially, the MXP4000 series of photodiodes are being offered in die form for manufacturers of photodiode A light sensor (photodetector) that allows current to flow in one direction from one side to the other when it absorbs photons (light). The more light, the more the current. Used to detect light pulses in optical fibers and other light-sensitive applications, it works the opposite of a  modules, supervisory VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) Pronounced "vixel." A type of laser diode that emits light from its surface rather than its edge. A VCSEL's circular beam is easy to couple with a fiber, and due to its surface-emission architecture, can be tested  monitoring circuits and combination PIN photodiode-transimpedance amplifier hybrids.

"When we announced our 850nm GaAs photodetectors in September we indicated that our InGaAs/InP detectors would be sampling by the end of the calendar year." stated Lane Jorgensen, vice president and general manager of the optical devices business unit. "As this announcement indicates, we continue to remain on track with development of our gallium arsenide products."

Compound Semiconductor Expertise

The company said it continues to expand its expertise in compound semiconductors with a focus on III-V and II-VI materials. Sampling of the MXP4000 series represents the fourth advanced material product introduced by Microsemi since July 2000.

Commenting on the preliminary product rollout, vice president of marketing and business development, Manuel Lynch stated, "Customers in this niche marketplace are eager to have another supplier to support the rapid growth of optical communication networks. Their interest has been very high during our evaluation of our prototype designs for these applications."

Microsemi indicated that it expects to be in volume production on the MXP4000 series by summer of 2001.

Future Developments

Microsemi also announced that it is in the final design stage of its first InGaP HBT HBT Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor
HBT HyCult Biotechnology (Uden, The Netherlands)
HBT Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (interferometer)
HBT Herring Bone Twill
HBT Heflex Bioengineering Test
transimpedance amplifier, which will complement its InGaAs/InP detector line. The company expects these samples to be available in March 2001.

Microsemi CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and president, Jim Peterson commented, "Our aggressive product roadmaps are being met, time and time again. We believe that coupling this gallium arsenide roadmap with our program to add internal GaAs foundry capacity will provide one recipe for success in meeting our corporate growth objectives."
