Microsemi Corp. (Nasdaq:MSCC) a leading manufacturer of analog and mixed signal integrated circuits, announced at the U.S. Flat Panel Display Conference here today that its Integrated Products Group has introduced an advanced multi-mode controller for lighting the cold cathode fluorescent lamps used in notebook computers, DVD players, large screen monitors and automotive displays.

Designated the LX1691(TM), the new controller is an advanced design based on Microsemi's popular LX1689(TM) controller. The highly integrated circuit includes new features that reduce external component count and module size. The LX1691 also interfaces seamlessly to Microsemi's visible light sensors that automatically control lamp brightness.

The LX1691 enables designers to use amplitude (analog) and duty cycle (digital) dimming control modes either separately or simultaneously. Both internally and externally clocked digital dimming is available, and analog dimming control can have either normal or inverted polarity.

Microsemi's patented direct drive architecture allows the LX1691 to be used in diverse applications since it can operate with system voltages ranging from 3 volts to more than 50 volts.

Also patented is Microsemi's unique method for striking, or starting, fluorescent lamps. This topology produces just enough strike voltage to light the lamp -- without generating unpredictable high voltage spikes that can cause arcing and component failures. The result is the industry's highest performing and safest strike solution.
