Microchip also announced it has begun volume shipments of its flagship PIC17C756 microcontroller and Version 2.10 of its popular MPLAB(TM)-C17 C Compiler supporting the PIC17CXXX family.

PIC17CXXX Family Overview

The expanded PIC17CXXX family offers design engineers a whole product solution and sets a new price/performance point for high-end 8-bit microcontrollers for computational-intensive applications requiring OTP flexibility and precision analog interface.

The new PIC17C752, PIC17C762 and PIC17C766 8-bit microcontrollers offer an upward migration path from the PIC16CXXX and PIC17C4X families to larger memory sizes and pin counts while maintaining the designer's code investment. The PIC17C7XXX family provides design engineers with a higher-performance solution versus Motorola's MC68HC11 and Hitachi's H8.

"With 16-bit microcontroller performance, the expanded PIC17CXXX family provides the enhanced speed, accuracy, and precision engineers need for next-generation designs -- along with critical functionality, such as multiple USARTs, integrated A/D technology, high throughput while power sensitive and high pin counts," said Ernest Villicana, vice president of marketing, Microchip's Advanced Microcontroller and Systems Group.

New High-Performance Microcontrollers

The new PIC17C752, PIC17C762 and PIC17C766 8-bit microcontrollers feature high precision peripherals, industry-leading performance of 8.25 MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  CPU CPU

Available on all three new devices, the A/D offers a high-speed conversion rate and ability to convert while in sleep mode, targeting power management for battery operations.

Other peripheral features include: up to 66 I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

Like its fixed-width pulse density modulation (PDM) cousin, the output switching transistor is on more of the time for a  output (1-10 bits resolution with 130 KHz at 8 bits and 32 KHz at 10 bits); local communications capability for peripheral expansion (I2C I2C Inter-Integrated Circuit

(TM)/SPI(TM) compatible); and four timers (two 8 bit and two 16 bit).

The large program and data memory in the new microcontrollers allow very sophisticated system implementations in high level languages, such as C, for decreased development time and future flexibility for semi-custom solution.

These features make the devices ideal for demanding real-time embedded control applications where high 8-bit performance is critical, including motor control, air bag controllers, data encryption, set-top boxes, network switches and a growing list of other applications.

"The affordable, one-time programmable (OTP) capabilities offered by the PIC17CXXX and the PICmicro(TM) family solve a range of critical business problems for our customers," said Villicana.

"Engineering managers can react faster to code changes and reduce the time required to fix bugs or respond to special customer requests for changes. OTP also reduces the design verification cycle, which can be as long as 16 weeks with competitive ROM-based devices. "Microchip's worldwide distributors stock OTP devices, allowing customers to meet any up-side sales opportunities or accommodate engineering changes off the shelf."

New C Compiler & Comprehensive Development Systems Support

Microchip's new Version 2.10 of its popular MPLAB(TM)-C17 C Compiler is a complete high-level language compiler for Microchip's high-performance PIC17CXXX family. The C compiler generates relocatable code that can be linked with powerful PICmicro libraries, user defined libraries and relocatable MPASM assembled objects.

The PICmicro libraries contain a collection of more than 150 processor-specific routines written just for the PIC17CXXX. The compiler allows users to write code for PICmicro MCU applications in a high level language. The detailed operation of the target processor is mostly hidden, which means less time is devoted to considering the details of the processor's architecture.

The PIC17CXXX is supported by the PICMASTER(R) Universal Development System, the industry's most complete, fully-integrated programming development and emulation system. Operating in the Microsoft Windows(R) environment, the comprehensive PICMASTER is available for $2,490 without the PRO MATE(R) II device programmer ($3,345 with PRO MATE II).

The development system features the MPLAB(TM) Integrated Development Environment See IDE.

integrated development environment - interactive development environment
, which gives users the flexibility to edit, compile and emulate all from a single user interface -- at no additional cost.

A CE-compliant version of PICMASTER is available for European applications. Low-cost PICmicro microcontroller development is provided by PICSTART(R) Plus, the MPLAB(TM) development software suite and a programmer supported by assembler and simulator software tools. Other PIC17CXXX support and development tools include fuzzy logic tools, programming support and a software simulator.

Pricing in 10,000-unit quantities (commercial temperature versions) is $7.89 each for the PIC17C752-16/SP PDIP (Plastic DIP) See DIP. ; $9.64 each for the PIC17C762-16/L PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) A plastic, square, surface mount chip package that contains leads on all four sides. The leads (pins) extend down and back under and into tiny indentations in the housing. See chip package. ; and $10.52 each for the PIC17C766-16/L PLCC.

Samples are available today with volume shipments planned for third quarter 1998. MPLAB-C17 Version 2.10 is available for immediate delivery at $495. For more information, contact any Microchip sales representative or authorized worldwide distributor.
