Environmental Clean-Up Effort That Will Raise

Awareness of Antarctica Preservation

The company is sponsoring John Germain, an art teacher at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor Elementary in Bay Harbor, Florida, to travel to Antarctica and participate in a global environmental and educational effort on the continent. The mission, beginning December 30 and lasting through January 15, is designed to assist in the cleanup of the Russian Research Base at Bellingshausen on the Antarctic Peninsula, and to share knowledge about the largely unknown region.

By educating younger generations on the preservation of Antarctica, the mission intends to foster future support for the Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, which will be up for renewal in 2041. The protocol states that Antarctica should only be used for peaceful scientific and educational purposes. Mission Antarctica's educational program aims to attract millions of pledges from around the world via its Website, http://www.missionantarctica.com.

Germain is one of three teachers and four students chosen for the mission from more than 90 participating countries, and is the only representative from the United States. After returning from Mission Antarctica, Germain will be sharing his experiences through a series of presentations given to his students at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor Elementary and other Miami-area schools. In collaboration with the school counselor, Germain will also be writing and illustrating a children's book entitled "Mr. Germain Goes To Antarctica."
