Metrowerks to Develop JIT Compiler for Java on ARM Microprocessors; ARM to Act as Master Licensor to ARM Licensees.SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 1997--Metrowerks Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :MTWKF)(TSE/ME:MWK MWK In currencies, this is the abbreviation for the Malawi Kwacha. Notes: The currency market, also known as the Foreign Exchange market, is the largest financial market in the world, with a daily average volume of over US $1 trillion. ) and Advanced RISC Machines (ARM) this week announced at the Embedded Systems Conference West in San Jose that they have entered into a development agreement whereby Metrowerks will develop a specialized Just-in-Time (JIT JIT - dynamic translation ) compiler for Java for use with ARM microprocessor architectures. As part of the agreement, Metrowerks will develop the technology, and ARM will act as the master licensor for this technology to its business partners for use with Java Virtual Machines This article provides non-exhaustive lists of J2SE Java virtual machines (JVMs). It does not include a large number of Java Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) vendors. Note that J2EE runs on the standard J2SE JVM but that some vendors specialize in providing a modified JVM optimized (Java VM) running on ARM architectures. The JIT technology will provide support for both ARM and THUMB instruction sets and will be delivered in the first quarter of calendar 1998. The JITs will support the JIT interface supported by JavaSoft as part of the Sun JDK (Java Development Kit) A Java software development environment from Sun. It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language. . The agreement to develop and license a JIT compiler for Java to ARM is a direct result of Metrowerks' strategy to offer CodeWarrior embedded development tools for the proprietary OS market, the RTOS/Windows CE market, and the embedded Java technology market. "We're extremely pleased to be working with ARM to provide our state-of-the-art JIT technology for Java," said Greg Galanos, president and chief technology officer of Metrowerks. "The Metrowerks JIT, already present in Microsoft Internet Explorer See Internet Explorer. on 68K and PowerPC has worked in very demanding performance environments and is an excellent solution for the ARM architecture given its robust retargetable design." Metrowerks JIT technology is based on its proprietary JIT compiler architecture that allows the company to rapidly retarget the JIT to different microprocessors running a version of the SUN Java VM. The Metrowerks JIT for ARM will greatly accelerate any Java application running on the Java VM. "By licensing Java acceleration technology from Metrowerks, we have a great value-added benefit we can offer our customers," said Mike Muller, vice president of Business Development at ARM. "We're very happy to be able to provide our customers with these kinds of advanced technology that help keep them ahead in the high performance embedded systems marketplace." About Advanced RISC Machines ARM is a leader in microprocessor Intellectual Property. ARM designs and licenses fast, low-cost, power-efficient RISC processors, peripherals and "system-chip" solutions for embedded control, consumer/educational multimedia, DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive and portable applications. ARM supports its processor offerings with development hardware and software and contract design services. ARM licenses its technology to leading semiconductor, software and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and partners worldwide who focus on applications, design and manufacturing. Each partner offers unique ARM-related technologies and services which together satisfy a broad range of end-user needs. Through this partnering, ARM is rapidly becoming the global volume RISC RISC in full Reduced Instruction Set Computing Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. About Metrowerks Embedded Systems Products CodeWarrior solutions for the embedded systems market start with the CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment See IDE. integrated development environment - interactive development environment , or "IDE," a unified environment available for both desktop and embedded application development. The CodeWarrior IDE contains a complete set of tools including class browsers, debuggers, editors, and a state-of-the-art project manager which obsoletes "make" files. CodeWarrior embedded tools all feature the CodeWarrior two-machine source-level debugger which plugs seamlessly into the CodeWarrior IDE and communicates with the new MetroTRK (Target Resident Kernel). MetroTRK, developed by Metrowerks and available in source to Metrowerks' licensees, is a software debug monitor for use with CodeWarrior source-level debuggers. MetroTRK is suitable for use as a board-level software debugger, or, in its extended form, as an application-level debugger. CodeWarrior highly optimizing compilers, linkers and assemblers are available for the 68K, PowerPC, x86 and MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. families of microprocessors for C, C++, and Java. Metrowerks has already announced that in 1998, it will add support for the NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98). NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. VR/V8xx, ARM, and Hitachi SuperH families of microprocessors. CodeWarrior all-in-one programming tools are the foundation for Metrowerks' entry into the three major embedded markets: the proprietary OS market; the RTOS/Windows CE market; and the embedded Java technology market. With over 100 software engineers, Metrowerks invests 35% of the company's revenues in CodeWarrior research and development. Metrowerks has the resources to create state-of-the-art embedded tools. With the CodeWarrior IDE already used by over 100,000 registered desktop users in 75 countries, Metrowerks' CodeWarrior IDE development costs can be amortized over a very large number of users. This competitive advantage enables Metrowerks to sell CodeWarrior embedded tools at the ground-breaking price of under $1,000 per seat. -0- Metrowerks, the Metrowerks logo and CodeWarrior are registered trademarks, and MetroTRK is a trademark of Metrowerks Inc.
